About North Cyprus

Beşparmak Mountains divide Northern Cyprus into two geographically. In the south, the Mesarya plain stretches from Famagusta to Nicosia and the fertile Güzelyurt Plain stretches from Nicosia to Lefke. In the north, there are beautiful coves and gardens on the foothills of the mountains on the rich coastline at the foot of the Beşparmaklar.  

Nicosia is the capital of TRNC. Famagusta, Iskele, Girne and Güzelyurt are other important cities. %57 of Northern Cyprus lands are agricultural land. Fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits, barley, wheat, olives, olive oil, potatoes, carob and carrots are grown in the country. Insufficient water resources are used in the most appropriate way with modern irrigation systems.

Small cattle and cattle are also raised on the island. Meat, milk, cheese and yogurt products are very high quality. Especially “Halim Cheese” is very famous. In addition, afforestation works are carried out to protect the green vegetation of the island. Beekeeping has developed due to its long spring.

In terms of industry, small scale industrial enterprises built on the islands are also found in Cyprus. There are significant advances in food, construction and clothing. Industry which was established as small and medium sized enterprises, operates in Organized Industrial Zones in Nicosia, Famagusta and Girne and the Free Port established in Famagusta. Electricity generation is made in Kalecik and Teknecik power plants and meets the country’s needs.

Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are long and dry, winters are short and rainy. The annual average temperature is 19C (66F). Summer average is around 40C (105F). Sea water average is 21C (75F). The weather is not very cold in winter, it is mild and an average of 500 mm of rain falls annually. The most beautiful and longest season is spring.

Evergreen trees such as Pine, Turunç, Harup, Cypress, Olive as well as maquis, deciduous trees, dwarf trees and shrubs and various endemic flower species form the general vegetation of Cyprus. The Mediterranean climate has provided the natural richness of Cyprus. The most common forest tree species are Pine, Cypress, Oak and Eucalyptus. There are many kinds of flowering plants, orchids that grow naturally in Northern Cyprus and 19 endemic plant species that grow in Cyprus.

Northern Cyprus is a country with rich animal species as it hosts both migratory birds and living on the island. For this reason, hunting is highly developed on the island. Due to its geographical location and the fact that Northern Cyprus is on the migration routes between Africa and Europe, it is the center of accommodation and spawning. It is possible to come across seagulls on rare occasions.

Girne

Northern Cyprus is also rich in natural caves. The caves to be explored still await in mystery. It has been determined that there are around 85 large and small, natural or man made caves. The İncirli Cave which contains the most beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, is open to visitors. The village headman of İncirli helps to visit the cave which is reached by an asphalt road. It is illuminated inside and photos can be taken with a tripod and flash. Colonnaded Cave in İnönü is also a cave worth seeing. The “Ecinni Sinileri” located around Kalavaç village are waiting to be discovered with its interesting structure. The thousand year old olive trees in Kalkanlı have been arranged as a nature walkway and taken under protection. Eleven people can only surround the trunk of some olive trees by holding hands. This shows the splendor of the trees. The best part is that these historical olive trees are still producing.

If you follow the old road on the northern coastline, you will find yourself in a nostalgic trip. Çatalköy, Teknecik Power Plant, Alagadi, Esentepe, Küçükerenköy, Tatlısu, Kaplıca, Yedikonuk, Balalan, Esenköy, Yeşilköy, Yenierenköy, Dipkarpaz are places that can be visited in a day with beautiful beaches, coves, fishermen’s shelters and historical monuments but they cannot be satisfied.

Famagusta, Tuzla, Salamis, Yeniboğaziçi, İskele, Boğaz, Kalecik (the village where the Power Plant, Cement and Oil depots are located), Çayırova, Büyükkonuk, Bafra (a corner of paradise with beautiful touristic facilities), Pamuklu, Mehmetçik, Kumyalı, Ziyamet, Boltaşlı, Derince, Avtepe, Taşlıca (one of the most beautiful beaches of the island is here), Kuruova, Kaleburnu ve Dipkarpaz are some of the settlements that adorn the southern coasts of the island.

There are many settlements in the Mesarya Plain between Famagusta and Nicosia. Generally, agriculture and animal husbandry are done. Some of these places are Mutluyaka, Çayönü, Güvercinlik, İnönü, Beyarmudu, Pile, Akdoğan, Pirhan, Dörtyol, Pirhan, Geçitkale (the second airport of Northern Cyprus is here), Serdarlı, Nergizli, Turunçlu, Ulukışla, Paşaköy, Gönendere, Dilekkaya, Akıncılar, Gaziköy, Demirhan, Minareliköy, Kalavaç, Görneç, Değirmenlik Haspolat, Hamitköy.

Salamis Ancient City

There are beautiful villages between Nicosia and Lefke. Some of these are Gönyeli, Alayköy, Dağyolu, (İlker Karter Airport is here), Dikmen, Pınarbaşı, Yılmazköy, Serhatköy, Zümrütköy, Gaziveren, Cengizköy, Gemikonağı, Bağlıköy, Bademliköy, Yeşilırmak’tır.

The wide, long and unique beaches of Cyprus with fine sand are the spawning centers of the endangered and protected Caretta Caretta and Chelonia mydas turtles in the world. The people of Cyprus who have a very developed sense of environmental protection Private Turtle Conservation Societies, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources carefully monitor the sea turtles that come to spawn in Altınkum, Alagadi, Ronnas and other beaches.
